Student Council

Congratulations to our new Student Council officers for 2008-2009!

President: Katherine Barna
Vice President: Nicholas Diaz

Secretary: Dawn Gergich
Treasurer: Justin Martin

Moderators: Mrs. Cannon & Ms. Smid

The Student Council would like to welcome everyone to the 2008-2009 school year.  The Induction Ceremony for the new officers was held on Friday, September 12.  The representatives were also introduced at this time.

One of the responsibilities of the Academy Student Council is community service.  In the past, the Academy students have not only helped people in local communities, but also on the other side of the world with the Tsunami victims, cancer patients, and the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Some of the events sponsored by the 2007-2008 Student Council included a successful Holiday Food Drive that ran in November and December.  The many boxes of food were donated to diocesan food pantries and soup kitchens through the Food Network.

In December the Student Council visited the Senior Citizens at the Gregorio Center, giving them homemade ornaments, goodies, and a lot of Christmas spirit!

They also hosted a "Breakfast with Santa" for the youngest members of the school: Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade 1.  The children ate a breakfast of french toast sticks, milk and juice before Santa arrived.  Each student was given a small gift from Santa.

The Student Council arranged for the school to draw Earth Day messages on grocery bags that will be distributed by a local supermarket on Earth Day to remind shoppers of the importance of taking care of our planet.

Students of the month are chosen in each class, grades 1 through 8, based on a student's Christian behavior and good class performance.  They are recognized at the monthly Student Council meeting and awarded with a "student of the month" pin.

Students of the Month of November

Grade 1 - Kaddin Berry

Grade 2 - Simone Abdullahi

Grade 3 - Caitlin Diaz

Grade 4 - Matthew Youn

Grade 5 - Emily Badalis

Grade 6 - Andrew Youn

Student Council Officers lit candles, recited oaths, and received pins at the induction ceremony.

Annual Food Drive

Students and Student Council Officers help box the collected food under the direction of Mrs. Cannon, Student Council Advisor.

This year the food will help to replenish the food pantries in the Archdiocese.  Every year the Student Council sponsors a food drive to help families in need as part of the Academy's Quality of Life theme that focuses on service to others.

Student Council President Stephanie Gomulka and Vice President Nicholas Martin pack up the grocery bags that the Academy students designed to help celebrate Earth Day 2008.  The bags will be distributed at the Clark Shoprite on April 22 to remind shoppers to take care of our planet.

Students Samantha Valderrama, Farley Thomas, Gabriela Pawluczuk and Amanda Cunha helped with the finished bags.

Student Council representatives visited the Senior Citizens at the Gregorio Center in Linden.  The students sang Christmas carols and then handed out hand-made ornaments and goodies to the seniors.  The students left feeling the true spirit of the season.
